If you find it difficult to keep your home cool in hot summer months, then you might want to install new air conditioning or upgrade your current cooling system. In either case, you might want to think about a ducted solution.
These systems run from a central unit. The unit sends air-conditioned air into your home through a network of grilles in individual rooms.
What are the benefits of installing ducted air conditioning?
Some air conditioning solutions, such as split systems, struggle to cool large spaces or multiple rooms. You need an indoor unit in each room that you want to cool; you might find it hard to find a single system that can run enough units for your needs.
While these systems can work effectively in apartments or smaller homes, they aren't always the best solution in larger properties. However, if you install a ducted system, then you get air conditioning wherever you want it in your home.
The central unit guides cooled air throughout its system efficiently. If a room has a connected grille in it, then the system can cool the room down.
So, designing a whole-house solution is easier. Plus, if you choose a reverse-cycle ducted product, you can also use the system to heat your home when the weather is colder.
While having air conditioning in every room in your home might be a relief, you might also worry about how this will affect your energy usage and bills. However, this kind of whole-house system doesn't have to be expensive to run.
A ducted system is often more efficient than systems where you have to run units more often and at higher speeds to try and spread cooled air around your home. Typically, you can control how and where ducted air conditioning works. You can program the system on a room or zonal basis.
For example, you can set a timer to have the system come on when you know you want to cool things down, say a couple of hours before you get home from work. Or, you can set zones where the system runs at different times or at different temperatures.
So, if you don't see the point of cooling your bedrooms during the day when you won't be in them, then you can focus your cooling in the rooms you will use. As you get close to bedtime, you can set your bedroom zones to cool and switch off the system in your living areas.
Air conditioning systems can take up space around your home. For example, if you use individual units, then they take up a fair bit of wall or ceiling space. You might not be able to install a unit in the optimum position if you don't have room for it in the right place.
Ducted air conditioning doesn't have this kind of footprint. The primary unit is hidden away. While you do need somewhere for the grilles to go, this shouldn't be a problem.
Grilles come in various shapes and sizes, and they don't have to take up much space. Your air conditioning spread will be more effective in each room, so you don't have to worry about placement as much.
Many air conditioning units don't always look great in the home. Some people feel that they look clunky and out of place. They can detract from a nicely decorated room. Plus, some systems are noisy.
A ducted air conditioning solution is often more discreet, both cosmetically and acoustically. Its grilles are subtle and unobtrusive. The system itself should also run more quietly.
